All-inclusive luxury Costa Rica family vacation specializing in surf instruction, adventure tours, attention to detail and lifetime of memories.
We spent 8 exciting days with the folks of Premier Surf Club located in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. This is a luxury vacation combined with professional surf instruction, adventure tours, a spa day, fabulous restaurants (recommended by the concierge) and and out of this world tantalizing gourmet dinners in suite with the renowned Chef Derek. Every single detail was attended to by the lovely staff and owners, superior customer service is an understatement It took my husband and I a couple of days to get used to the luxury and service. The accommodations are exactly what you see on the website, spectacular. There is an infinity pool right in front of the patio doors and a beautiful beach and ocean a few feet beyond that. We stayed in a 3 bdrm, 4 bath condo, each bedroom has it’s own bathroom so great for larger groups.
We opted for the surf package which included daily surfing with professional instructors with awesome attitudes, nightly video review of our surfing on a 10 ft projector screen in our room, 2 adventure days of our choosing, 2 massages each, 2 yoga lessons in the room, a day at the spa and all meals and even transportation. When we went to a restaurant there was no bill, Premier paid the tab the following day. We showed up, dined in the finest restaurants and walked away. I could get used to that! the evenings that we chose to have Chef Derek, he and his beautiful assistant Grace, would show up around 4pm to start preparing and we would arrive from the beach to a beautifully set table, wine chilled and appetizers waiting. Each evening the meal was 3 or 4 courses and equivalent to something you’d have at the Ritz, in a super casual setting. BTW Chef Derek worked at the Ritz at one time. You will not be disappointed in anything he prepares. There is a menu you can choose from but after the first meal, we were so blown away that we asked him to surprise us for the rest of the evenings and we were…surprised, delighted and overjoyed. Thank you Chef Derek! BTW the service and presentation was fit for royalty and we enjoyed it in t-shirts and shorts! What could be better?
Surfing – Each evening Luis would tell us when the tides were in and what time they would pick us up in the morning. The cooks would arrive about 1 1/2 hour prior and cook us breakfast every day. Then we’d head out to the beach for 2-3 hours of surfing. We are both beginners but have been surfing before in Thailand and Hawaii. The instruction was very good, the guys are so encouraging, talented and patient. We practiced standing up on the beach before heading into the water. BTW the ocean is so warm! about 85F.We surfed as long as our bodies could hold us up. Premier took video of each of us every day. We’d review it at night with Luis and Derek and learn what to work on. It was excellent and so neat to see yourself in life size form on the projection screen. We surfed a couple of different beaches and various breaks according to the conditions and our skill level. We both really enjoyed watching our instructors surf while we caught our breath on the beach. All of the instructors are terrific, it doesn’t matter who you get, you’ll be happy.
I would highly recommend getting in shape and doing tons of push ups before you do this. it helped us but we were still sore every day, but not enough to deter us. That is why there are 2 adventure packages included so you can give your body a break. Oh and Advil didn’t hurt.
The in suite massages were amazing and required after surfing. The yoga helped too. The only thing I can say is that I regret not learning to surf in my 20’s vs 40’s but hey we did it!
There are many adventures to choose from. We opted for the Mega Combo tour which was through Swiss Tours which we thought was enjoyable but not super great. The reason I say that is we are kind of done with big tours on a greyhound bus. I would much rather have something private. But the package itself was very good. We did the one where you horseback ride, zip-line,go down a waterside (which was the BEST) and enjoy a mud bath and hot pools. It was great to try a bit of everything but if you are looking for a zip-line of a lifetime I would recommend you do that at Mt. Arenal. Premier has a driver that I would highly recommend, his name is Ivan Sequeira. He also does tours and you get that local touch and everything is to your schedule. For example if we wanted to stop and look at monkeys we did. I’ll write more about him in my Mt. Arenal review. Which is a must. It was a great combo. I wish I had another week to come back to Tamarindo at the end.
Included was a day at Los Altos de Eros day spa, a driver picks you up and takes you to this oasis in the mountains. The rooms are open air and look into the jungle. It was heaven, and the chocolate scrub was amazing, I was tempted to lick my arm clean! It’s real chocolate. It includes a gourmet lunch and wine! Yes, it was fab! I felt like a pampered princess.
Tamarindo is a great surf town. You will read in all the travel books how busy it is. I laughed when I got there, this is a sleepy super cool surf town with a main street that is only 2 blocks long. So if that’s bustling and busy to you, you must be from a farm. LOL It’s amazing how good the food is in this country. You can’t go wrong whether you go high end or stop at a roadside shack, it’s all delicious.
So our overall rating of Premier Surf Club is Excellent and Exceptional. If you are used to high end luxury, like the Ritz, or Intercontinental you will love the package and services offered by Premier, if you are used to a Best Western you will be living the dream! Take your chances I promise you, you won’t regret once cent or one moment. Thank you very sincerely to all, Derek, Glen, Luis, Flaco, Caramelo, Chef Derek, Bob & Veronica, Grace and Erica. We miss you and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making our Costa Rican adventure a trip of a lifetime.
